Sentence length shapes how easy writing is to read. Very long sentences are harder to follow, while many very short ones can feel choppy. Use the average and the longest sentence to spot where a draft needs splitting or joining.
Frequently asked questions
How are sentences counted?
A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or the Urdu full stop followed by a space or the end of the text. Decimals such as 3.5, version numbers such as 2.3.1 and common abbreviations such as Dr., Mr. and e.g. are not treated as sentence endings. A line break also ends a sentence, unless the next line continues in lowercase.
Why might another tool show a different number?
Tools differ in how they treat abbreviations, ellipses and line breaks. This counter follows the rules above, but unusual punctuation can still cause small differences.
Does it support Urdu sentences?
Yes. The Urdu full stop and the Arabic question mark are recognised as sentence endings.
